Sea Angel
Silk Yarn Monofiliment, Organza, 2021
Suspended in a world of pitch black, the creatures that have evolved to live in the deep sea have a unique beauty that has always captured my imagination. Taking its name from a type of gastropod that lost its shell in exchange for wings to traverse the ocean, this collection is the amalgamation of my love for marine morphology and science fiction. My goal with Sea Angels was to embody the delicate and otherworldly beauty of deep-sea organisms in a way that reflected my childhood obsession with aliens and life beyond our own.
Through my experimentation, I found that by adding monofiliment, the increased rigidity allowed for my knits to hold more complex and dynamic structures. This technique became one of the major drivers behind this collection. Rather than patterning or shaping, these knits are large rectangles that are then manipulated to work symbiotically with the body. I enjoyed how organic the process felt in creating each knit as I had no idea how each piece would drape after it was taken off the needle bed. Each knit is its own unique organism.
