Aesthetic Decay
Experimental Bio-Material Fashion , 2022
- Mediums: Agal Bioplastic + Digital
- Project Type: Apparel
In 2018, the last year for which the Environmental Protection Agency has data, it's estimated that the United States generated 17 million tons of textile waste, most of which ended up in landfills. The life cycle of fashion has become incresingly condensed as fast fashion, microtrends, and the internet have accelerated the nostalgia loop. The new is gone so quickly, causing us to reach back shorter and shorter distances for nostalgic fashion. As long as we continue living in a fast-paced, hypersaturated, late stage capitalist society, this unsustainable cycle will cause ruin enviromentally and aesthetically. Aesthetic Decay takes the ouroboros of the fashion cycle and has brought it to the point of total consumption. Cycles are last season, this collection aestheticizes the end.
Each look in the collection is inspired by one of the five stages of decomposition. Many of the looks are only capable for one time wear and are designed to be thrown away after their use. Many of the looks are made from biodegradable agal bioplastics, meaning that once the garment has served its purpose, it can be casted aside to decompose.
